Volunteers say Tentena explosions kill 27
|
JAKARTA - Local volunteers said that 27 were killed in the twin bomb explosions Saturday morning in a busy market in Central Sulawesi town of Tentena, according to reports on the website of Indonesia's English daily Jakarta Post. The number was based on the body counts at the Tentena General Hospital.
Deputy Chief of Police of the province Sukono earlier confirmedto Xinhua that 19 people were killed and some 20 others injured, including two policemen. The twin explosions, which happened respectively at 08:15 and 08:30 local time, were triggered off by home-made bombs in the Christian-dominated town, said Sukono.
National Chief of Police General Da'i Bachtiar is expected to visit the area later in the day to assess the situation, said the website. It is not clear yet who were the perpetrators of Saturday's violence. Tentena, some 60 kilometers away from the capital city of Poso,is considered as a safe haven for the Christians. Many of them have left Poso to find sanctuary there to avoid violent communal conflicts with the Muslim population.
